The Stonewall riots* (also referred to as the Stonewall uprising or the Stonewall rebellion) were a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay (LGBT) community against a police raid that began in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, at the Stonewall Inn in the Greenwich Village neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. They are widely considered to constitute the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBT rights in the United States.

On Saturday, June 15, 2019, the Libertarian Party of Broward County will be marching in the annual Stonewall Parade in Wilton Manors. The history of support from the Libertarian Party for the LGBT Community has been evident even from the very beginning of the establishment of the party all the way back in 1971. In 1975, influential American libertarian historian Ralph Raico, a colleague of Ayn Rand, wrote a groundbreaking essay entitled “Gay Rights: A Libertarian Approach”. The essay provides incisive analysis describing Libertarian policy positions “designed to move us toward a substantially freer society than the one we now have. And in our commitment to a world where gay people will have the same opportunity for meaning and dignity in their lives as all human beings…”

The Libertarian Party takes the following positions relevant to LGBT rights:
• Section 1.2 “Expression and Communication”:
o We support full freedom of expression and oppose government censorship, regulation or control of communications media and technology. We favor the freedom to engage in or abstain from any religious activities that do not violate the rights of others. We oppose government actions which either aid or attack any religion.
• Section 1.3 “Personal Relationships”:
o Sexual orientation, preference, gender, or gender identity should have no impact on the government’s treatment of individuals, such as in current marriage, child custody, adoption, immigration or military service laws. Government does not have the authority to define, license or restrict personal relationships. Consenting adults should be free to choose their own sexual practices and personal relationships.
• 1.6 “Parental Rights”:
o Parents, or other guardians, have the right to raise their children according to their own standards and beliefs. This statement shall not be construed to condone child abuse or neglect.
• Section 3.5 “Rights and Discrimination”:
Libertarians embrace the concept that all people are born with certain inherent rights. We reject the idea that a natural right can ever impose an obligation upon others to fulfill that “right.” We condemn bigotry as irrational and repugnant. Government should neither deny nor abridge any individual’s human right based upon sex, wealth, ethnicity, creed, age, national origin, personal habits, political preference or sexual orientation. Members of private organizations retain their rights to set whatever standards of association they deem appropriate, and individuals are free to respond with ostracism, boycotts and other free-market solutions.

The Libertarian Party of Broward County proudly invites you to walk with us in the 2019 Wilton Manors Stonewall Parade. Broward Libertarians are proud to participate for the second consecutive year to demonstrate solidarity with the community in their attempts to promote freedom and liberty. We encourage everyone to join us for a great afternoon including opportunities to meet fellow Libertarians and learn more about all of the many events planned for the remainder of 2019 and our ambitious plans to support and elect Libertarian candidates in local elections. There is more information on our web site including a registration page that will immediately connect you to our mailing list for future events.
